Come on
..Where are you!!

11 Sawston heroes sat in a cold changing room at saffron Walden last Saturday afternoon. The sudden realisation that we were about to face probably the best team in our league with 4 less than the prerequisite number of players for a Union side (also two less than a League side). Our thoughts firstly turned to our mobile phones I phoned Jurgen, Tom and several others hoping to find an additional player. Martin wanted to phone Justin then realised that he was sitting beside Justin before actually admitting that all his friends were in the room already.
Plan B then swung into action (plan C was to get changed back into normal cloths and quietly run away) I went and asked around found two more players, Ian and Mal from Walden 3rds, who thankfully wanted a game so came to play.
10 minutes into the game, we accidentally went ahead with a penalty kick it was a good all round kicking performance from Mark. In hindsight this was however a terrible error we should have waited for the 80th minute before taking the lead.
Walden soon got their game together and despite dropping a fair few chances made their numerical and physical advantage tell, rumbling in a few scores before the half was out.
It did not go unnoticed that we were carrying a few knocks Ian from Walden had twisted his ankle badly and Sean was struggling a bit. The referee (great game by the way) also pulled a calf. We all kept going, Martin Sean and Mal tackled their heads off in martins case he nearly did loose his head.
Justin Curtis playing back at scrum half again this year once again thought he was 20 years younger sprinting half the length of the pitch to score near the posts. The pack did great although struggled a little against the Saffron Walden rolling maul and found it tricky in the air.
After 80 minutes of pain the game ended Saffron Walden 56 Sawston 10.
The Players: Bob, Dave the Hooker, Andy the Beast East, Colin H, Mark J, Glenda, Ian, Justin, Mark, Sean, Mal, James and Martin S
Man of the match for Sawston: James Dean, tackled brilliantly all day, chased every cause may be a late call up for the Autumn Internationals.
A huge thank you to the Walden boys on both sides, you turned a disaster into a good afternoon. I am however looking forward to seeing you back at our place later in the season.
