The Perfect end…

The Sawston Second team took on Ely thirds at Ely on Saturday. It was the first time in years that they actually put out a third team against us, recent matches have seen our seconds take on Ely ones/ threes, Ely twos/ threes and who can ever forget playing Ely ones/ twos / threes.

Sawston had a good squad out, Vipers in at prop after being dropped from the firsts following the now infamous “penis- gate” incident. Nudge and Lewis back in the second row and Abs joining Vipers in the front row.

As the game started the Ely pack tried to take control, they were bigger in size, but lacked the fitness (not you Glenda) and support (Glenda if you’d have been fitter you’d have been there too) of the Sawston forwards.

Support was the key in the first half, every time we put an Ely player down there were waves of support in attendance. On one occasion 4 groups of Sawston players came in to win the ball – it was amazing to watch.

The Backs then used the ball well spreading the ball to the wings and punching holes through the Ely defence. Two tries from Kieran, two conversions and a penalty from Kicking Boots Curtis and only the second ever drop goal in second team history from our little Scottish Fly half Mark.

A legend retires.

Watching from the sideline before leaving the country in January, a Sawston legend of many years was watching the match. By the second half he’d run off to get changed and with 3 minutes to go he was on the wing for his last appearance.

A line out on the left hand side, led to quick ball though the hands of the backs, Jurgen tracked across the field and received the ball just outside the twenty two. Despite three opponents tracking across and Skippy outside him, Jurgs pinned his ears back and went for the corner. Diving in to score and receiving a huge cheer from the crowd. (Justin then converted from the tramlines). It was a brilliant end.

What they said.

It was entertaining listening to the Ely players behind the posts: our first try was a forward pass, all the kicks were dubious, including the drop goal, our second try was from a knock one and our last try shouldn’t have been allowed because Ely had a man off the pitch, they thought it should have been nil-nil….whiners

The real score however was Ely 3rd 0 Sawston 2nds 27 pts – a great and very entertaining victory. Players of note on the day: We honestly couldn’t have asked for anymore from any of the payers, to a man we were good. Little Ollie played really well when he came on for Lewis, Justin is playing like he’s twenty again and the kick from the tramlines was superb, Vipers despite playing at prop covered the pitch like a back row, Mark at fly was brilliant, Abs, Tom and Nick all made ground every time they got the Ball. Congrats to Tom and Skippy for putting together a great win

The downside: This performance does have one downside – The Ely third team have failed to show up at Sawston for about six years and beating them this soundly will not incentivise them to get on their donkeys, leave their sisters alone for a few hours and come and play us at our place in the new year.

The small print: if you want to take legal action against this website for anything that is stated in this or other reports posted then please note we have no money at all and you would be far better placed to sue Shelford Rugby Club, 174-178 Cambridge Road Cambridge, CB2 5JU, because they have lots of cash.

Next week: Shelford 5ths and Christmas beer….
