League games in bold

 November 3rd 2001
Motivation proved to be the key to Roystons 29 to 15 point victory in a Fiesty local derby at Sawston. Altogether it was a day the home side would wish to forget, few able to match the visitors commitment. Yet is was Sawston who were handed a gift start when Sean O'Connor intercepted a wild Royston pass on half way and was able to score under the posts for Olly Halliday to convert. Mark Williams pulled a try back but Sawston kept clear when Halliday added a penalty goal for a 10 - 5 lead at half time. In the second half Royston took control. Captain Kirk Woodford showed the way with his 10th try of the season and he was followed accross the home try line by "traitor" Scott Easy and Dave Ratcliffe. Simon reed landed a penalty and three conversions and although Sawston scored a late try through James Briggs the visitors thoroughly deserved their victory. To add insult to injury Sawston lost Richard Lintern with a cut to his eye lid that is almost certain to rule him out of next weeks game.

It was bloody cold, standing out in the middle of the fens. One of the cheeky opposition players had greased the ball before the start of the game, there wasn't a single back on the field who could keep hold of the ball. Fortunately the pack were there to save the day. Pete and James secured good line out ball, Chunkie was a revelation in the loose (I always though he was a fat lazy player - hes actually just fat) other good performances came from Chris (Beavis) turning his opposite number inside out on a regular basis, John Gibson and Nudger whos determination gave us the first try. There were other bright spots in the game, the comentary of Bill Reed on the sideline, kept our spirits up and some good banter between the two sets of supporters. Toby made a scoring start with a good try in the corner- from where I was standing I thought he grounded the ball and so did the linesman. Our opponents however didn't agree. To sum up it was a poor team performance but a good win...

BURY II's 27 v SAWSTON RFC 24 Match Report But for some woeful kicking, Sawston could have won this match against a good Bury II side. Sawston had a new front row with two 18 year props, of Christian Lloyd-Beavis and Tim Kaymak playing alongside experienced hooker Johnny Gunn. Sawston expected a hard game and were very surprised when after ten minutes they found themselves 14 - 0 up. A kick and chase try from DOMINIC DWYER from inside the Sawston half was converted by JUSTIN CURTIS after five minutes and some good back play allowed SEAN O'CONNOR to slice through the Bury backs and run under the posts which JUSTIN CURTIS again converted after ten minutes. Bury then scored two unconverted tries as they started to get their game together. The second half started fairly evenly. Bury were the first to score with a converted try giving them a lead for the first time in the game, but when Sawston scored another try by DOMINIC DWYER the kick was inexplicably missed from in front of the posts by Curtis. This seemed to galvanise Bury and they soon scored another converted try. Curtis' miserable day continued as he was pulled back for offside from a Pete Hume kick and chase after touching the ball down over the try line. Some quick thinking by Bury allowed them to score a drop goal ten minutes from time, but Sawston refused to give up and marched to the other end of the pitch. Some more good inter-linking play by the backs allowed WAYNE GRANTHAM to dive over the line in the corner and score a consolation try which again Curtis was unable to convert. The front row were praised by the veteran Bury front row in a game where Sawston stole a great deal of scrummage ball against the head.

 January 26th 2002
It was a good day at the office for Sawston as they ran in six tries on a pitch that was more like a quagmire and in conditions that were appalling to say the least. With constant driving rain and wind the Sawston pack wore down the Mistley pack's resistance and the Sawston three-quarters tore the Mistley backs apart. After some early pressure from the Mistley forwards, a loose pass was thrown along the Mistley back line allowing SEAN O'CONNOR to intercept and run 60 metres to score under the posts. Another break by O'Connor ten minutes later was halted by a good covering tackle but not before O'Connor had passed the ball out of the tackle to the supporting JOHN GIBSON to run in Sawston's second try which was converted by TOM GENILLARD. Fifteen minutes later some good interpassing from the Sawston backs allowed JUSTIN CURTIS to take an inside pass from Wayne Grantham and score under the posts with TOM GENILLARD converting again. In the second half, Mistley again started strongly but determined defending from meanest defence in the division, kept them out, and after ten minutes DOMINIC DWYER ran through some shoddy Mistley tackling to score. JAMES BRIGGS then capped a very fine forwards performance by scoring a try after some excellent rucking and mauling. The last try came from a set backs move with WAYNE GRANTHAM jinking his way through some tired tackles to score with TOM GENILLARD converting. Sawston now have the meanest defence in the division having only conceded 72 points in ten league games - an average of a converted try per game - and have scored 186 points. Sawston have a crunch game at home on Saturday against Broadlands who are in second place, but go in to the game with confidence running high.

 2nd February 2002
Sawston failed to get into get into second gear as they fell to a second defeat of the season to Broadlands. It was a day when the hard work of the forwards was undone by mistakes from the backs. A big positive that came from the game however was the performance of Sam Tomlinson in his debut game for the first team at scrum half. Broadlands took the game to Sawston from the first whistle, and scored a try after ten minutes. Sawston came back and TOM GENILLARD converted a penalty to make the score 3 - 7. A second penalty from TOM GENILLARD put Sawston in contention until Broadlands then converted penalty to take the score to 6 - 10. The second half was more of the same with promising Sawston moves breaking down within the Broadlands twenty two. Broadlands then scored a try late in the game to put the game beyond Sawston's reach. A disappointing day was also marred by some nasty injuries inflicted by a less than legal Broadlands side with several stops for blood injuries. Sawston will now have to rest and regroup for their next league match in 3 weeks time against Witham.

 Feb 25th 2002
Injuries and absence left Sawston without four or five key players as they fell to a dogedly determined Witham side. Missing both regular half backs, full back and outside centre, the back line looked short of ideas. That said, the standard of refereeing was also of a low calibre as the man in the middle missed many incidents of foul play and did not pick up the constant fringing and offside offences. Sawston won the toss and took advantage of the wind at their backs. They were unable to make the most of this advantage with the one penalty they elected to kick at goal, being dragged wide by the wind. Sawston had a great deal of pressure in the Witham half but were unable to prevent a counter attack which allowed the Witham forwards to set up their backs for a contentious try in the corner. The second half was much of the same with Witham also unable to take advantage of the elements. In a fluctuating second half neither side were able to add to the scoreboard. The Sawston team will look back on this match as a missed opportunity to keep pace with the top two sides in the league and will hope that their key players, such as Wayne Grantham, Dominic Dwyer and Tom Genillard will recover from injury in time for their next league match in two weeks. One positive that came from the match was that although they lost the game, the defence only conceded one try and is still the meanest defence in the division.
